As writers, John and Paul soaked up literally every influence imaginable. One of John’s early inspirations was Smokey Robinson, the Motown pop sensation who sang, wrote, arranged and produced hit songs for Berry Gordy. On the album With The Beatles, they even covered one of Smokey’s songs, “You Really Got A Hold On Me.” In an 1980 interview, John said that “All I’ve Got To Do” was his attempt “to do Smokey Robinson again.”
