Imagine that you are the producer of the Temptations’ next recording, and you want to induce a dreamlike atmosphere to the production. What would you do? Well, the instrument of choice for “dreamy” music is the harp, so that would go in. So would languid strings, a lazy tempo, and a singing style that is no hurry to meet the barline. That is what co-writer/producer Norman Whitfield did with this delicate hit, that went to number one in 1971.
