The star of this 1968 hit, besides the singer of course, is the rhythm section. Bassist Tim Drummond can also be heard on many artists’ hits, from Lonnie Mack to Bob Dylan. Drummer John “Jabo” Starks was already established in Bobby Blue Bland’s band, and his exciting drumming can be heard on Bland’s blistering “Turn On Your Lovelight.” James Brown heard Starks’ drumming also, and through persistent efforts, was able to win him over to his own band.
