In 1960, a 17 year old Mary Wells presented a song she had written for Jackie Wilson (“Bye Bye Baby”) to Berry Gordy, who was producing Wilson then. Gordy signed her up instead to his newly formed label, Motown. Wells turned out to be the label’s first artist to have a # 1 single. “My Guy” was written by Smokey Robinson, who followed up the next year by writing “My Girl” for the Temptations.
