“No Reply,” the opening track to the Beatles For Sale album, was John’s attempt to write his version of “Silhouettes,” a hit in 1957 by the Rays: “That’s my song. . . It was sort of my version of ‘Silhouettes’…I had that image of walking down the street and seeing her silhouetted in the window and not answering the phone.” The bridge (letter C) is another great example of Beatle songwriting.
