From 1954 to 1961, one of the strong currents running through rock’n’roll was “doo-wop,” a style of music whose dominant element was the vocals, and so named after the sometimes nonsensical syllables sung as background. One of the memorable groups in that genre was the Coasters, whose hits invariably covered humorous topics. “You’re gonna need an ocean/Of calamine lotion” is one of the great lines in this 1959 Leiber/Stoller hit.
