Bruce Hornsby flitted around the music business until he hit it big with “The Way It Is,” which went to number one in 1986. One of the song’s signature sounds is that syncopated catchy piano riff that reoccurs throughout the piece. Rapper Tupac Shakur would later sample that riff for his song “Changes.” Hornsby also wrote “Jacob’s Ladder” for Huey Lewis and the News.
