Here is genuine rock classic that was a first on two counts: it was the first number one record by a girl group (January, 1961), and was the first number one hit by the great husband and wife writing team of Gerry Goffin and Carole King, who were responsible for literally dozens of other rock classics. Writer Dave Marsh, in his book listing the 1001 greatest singles ever made, pegged this at number 105, calling it “the most lush of all the girl groups classics…a masterpiece of early sixties New York studio craft.”
